Perama is on the  opposite hill of Kanoni, a long bridge is crossing the sea and joins the two sides of Corfu which can be passed only on foot taking you to the Convent of Vlachernas under the hill of Kanoni. Getting  back on your mini bus your Corfu tour continues heading to another interesting destination the traditional and famous village Pelekas.

          Pelekas Village.

Pelekas is a traditional village built on one of the most beautiful hills of Corfu island which attracts many tourists every year. Apart from the traditional form of the village, with the narrow streets, the main square and its churches, the main characteristic of Pelekas is the magnificent view from the top of the hill known as the ‘ throne of Kaiser ‘ , because  the German emperor Kaiser Goulielmos the 2nd   used to enjoy  this magnificent spectacle. At dawn, the sunset from the top of the hill of Pelekas is considered to be the most beautiful in Corfu.  If you, your friend or group of friends feel like having a coffee, the cafe close to Kaiser Throne is open there all day offering apart from a drink the unique view of the Ionian Sea.    Passing through villages and green hills, our next stop will be Paleokastritsa.

          Paleokastritsa.

Paleokastritsa is located on the northwest coast of Corfu. It is considered to be one of the most beautiful resorts of Corfu. It consists of six different small coasts and rocky beaches with crystal blue sea water. From almost each coast small boats can take you to a boat trip to the caves that can be found along its coastline to admire the crystal water and the beauty of the nature. There are two most known and important caves that you will be visiting. The first one is called Nausica Cave, named after the daughter of the King of the Phaeacians. It is said that she found in there Odysseus and nursed him back to health. The second most worthseeing one is called Blue Eye due to a patch of incredibly blue water which resembles an eye.

Above the main coast on a hillside full of wild trees and olive trees facing the deep blue sea stand the Monastery of Theotokos. The Monastery was built around 12th  century and inside in one of the cells a museum has been founded with Byzantine and post Byzantine icons. Int the main courtyard of the monastery there is also an old well where you can throw a coin and make a a wish which with the blessings of Virgin Mary Theotokos it will probably come true.

Close to Paleokastritsa is the very well known village of Lakones. From this village the view is spectacular, even better from the one you can enjoy from the Hill of Monastery of Theotokos. So at Lakones we have planned your next stop.

          Lakones Village.

It is a traditional Corfu village where apart from the view you can enjoy excellent Greek food and even some of the local special Corfu menus. Maybe some Sofrito, Pastitsada or even a chilly Mpourdeto at the local restaurants and taverns. Usually the uplifting energy of your lunch and the local wine, creates a need to see more and continue the tour. So next stop is the close castle of Aggelokastro. Getting on your mini bus we have planned to drive you through villages Krini and Makrades to Byzantine Castle of Aggelokastro.

          Aggelokastro.

Aggelokastro is the westernmost fortress of the Byzantine empire and the Despotate of Epirus, which included Corfu until 1267. It was built at the 12th  century and  according to the local tradition, the inhabitants and the 8 guards, resisted so successfully that the Turks decided to retreat and leave Corfu. Inside the castle you will discover the churches of Taxiarches and Agia Kyriaki. Agia Kyriaki was  built in a small cave and Taxiarches on top of another older Church. The view from the castle is unique. Most of the visitors come even on foot from a Byzantine path that starts from Paleokastritsa, just to admire this view.

Old Fortress – Old Corfu Town.

After this, relax in the privacy and comfort of your mini bus. Our driver will drive you to the old Corfu town center where you are able to visit the old Fortress of  Corfu, do some shopping into the venetian style Corfu Town shops, have a coffee in the famous Liston and get the blessings from the Miracle-Worker , Saint Spyridon by your visit into the main Church of Corfu, Saint Spyridon Church.

Just before your cruise ships sales away you will be driven outside the main entrance of the Port, exactly  where your Corfu tour had started having after all this places a pretty good idea of the unique beauty of Corfu island.

The best and most visited Monasteries in Corfu

The beauty and endurance of the Greek Orthodox Monasteries have made Corfu an attractive destination for religious tourism. Whether alone or as part of a group it is possible to visit or even stay at some of these monasteries. Some are rich in history, others rich in beauty and even in ecclesiastical artistic talent that travels far and wide.

            Monastery of Paleokastritsa.

Perhaps the most visited due to its prominent position is the Monastery of Yperagia Theotokou in Paleokastritsa. Not only is it one of the first to be built dating back to 1228 but the views of Corfu Island’s west coast are dramatically beautiful making it one of the most famous spots on the island. Edward Leer, Louis Golding and Arthur Foss are amongst the prominent foreigners that have stayed here. A small museum also exists within the monastery walls. Clothing attire is to be respectful as is the monastic condition of silence.

            Agios Athanasios Monastery.

Further north is the women run Monastery in the name of Pandokratorou of Agios Athanasios in the village of Agros on the Corfu Sidari road. The elaborate mural paintings in the main church have been painted by resident nuns. As a result the iconography, colours and lines are slightly more effeminate than the usual austere byzantine style. It is a truly spectacular and at the same time pious sight not to be missed. As well as working the land and accepting resident visitors this monastery houses an icon restoration and production workshop that receives orders from far and wide.

            Agios Dimitrios.

In the same northern area of the island are the three monasteries of Agios Dimitrios in the village of Agii Douli, Agias Triados in Klimatia and Pandokratoros in Kamarella. All three are small in size but their location dwells on the beauty and serenity of their natural surroundings. These religious retreats are typical examples of Corfu’s monastic life soaking in the sun and subdued ambience of an island whose beauty speaks for itself.

            Monastery of Ypsilou Pandokratoros.

On the highest peak of Corfu Island at 917 meters is the small but important Monastery of Ypsilou Pandokratoros. Naturally symbolising a gate to Heaven a pilgrimage is held in its name every year on August 6th with people arriving day and night. The journey used to be completed by donkey or on foot and many rich stories and legends of miracles and sainthood follow.

            Yperagia Theotokou Myrtidiotissis.

Another striking residence of Greek orthodox monasticism is the graphic Monastery of Yperagia Theotokou Myrtidiotissis on the central west coast. Set amongst the olive groves just above sea level with striking rock faces hanging above it makes for a memorable journey best completed on foot in order to appreciate the extent of its beauty. The popular beach of Mirtiotissa is nearby.

            Agia Paraskevi.

Just ten kilometers south of Corfu Town in the village of Kinopiastes is the women’s cloister of Agia Paraskevi. The monastery celebrates on July 26th with many also choosing it as an option to celebrate Easter rather than the busy Corfu Town scene. In the same central area of Corfu Island is the male monastery of Agion Thodoron dating back to the 16th century in the small village of Kamara.

            Monastery of Yperagias Theotokou Platiteras.

The Monastery of Yperagias Theotokou Platiteras is centrally located and is adjacent to the headquarters of the Orthodox Church in Corfu Town. Built as early as 1743 its reconstruction was heavily supported by Ioannis Kapodistrias and his family after the church was destroyed by the French in 1798. The tomb of the first governor of Greece can be visited here too. Due to its central role in Corfu’s religious circles this monastery has shaped much of the religious heritage of the island.

            Agia Eufymia.

A beautifully kept monastery in the name of Agia Eufymia is two kilometers south of Corfu Town in the area of Anemomylos. It is a particularly pleasant and harmonious cloister run by only a few nuns that take care of the surrounding property. Its beauty in fact attracted the building of Mon Repos Palace nearby in 1832.
